MILOS BEACH
AGIOS YOANNIS, THE WINDMILL BEACH!
Wonderful and long beach of thin sand, on the northern tip of Lefkada, called the beach of the windmills because there still are the remains of 4 of the 12 windmills used in the past to grind grain. The mills were active until the early 1900s before falling into disuse, but 4 of them are still intact and a restaurant has recently been opened inside one of these.
This location is spectacular: a long stretch of sand with the turquoise water of the Ionian Sea, behind the beach a large lagoon, and in the middle the white towers of the windmills.
This beach has become the one of the most famous spot in the mediterranean sea for kite surfing: during the summer many kite surfers gather in one part of the beach, coloring the landscape with their colorful kites.
The beach is located very close to the town of Lefkada, reachable in a few minutes.
The wind conditions are ideal in the morning for those who want to learn kite surfing or windsurfing, while in the afternoon the wind strengthens and is perfect for the experts to whiz around, offering a show not to be missed.
For those who just want to relax, lie in the sun and bathe in the transparent water will find great satisfaction here! You will find many restaurants and bars along the beach, some of those do have some sunbeds on the beach with beach service.
OUR SUGGESTIONS
All along the west coast of the island, but mostly here, the rare caretta-caretta turtles lay their eggs every year. You will see the marked and fenced “nests“, please be careful and do not get too near! If you are really lucky, maybe one summer day at sunset you will witness the hatching of the eggs and the exit of the small turtles that run towards the sea!
WHAT TO DO
Along the beach there are restaurants and bar, ideal for a lunch on the beach or an aperitif after a long day under the sun. The most famous and panoramic is “Milos Orloff”, an actual old windmill, from which you can enjoy fantastic sunsets. Right next to it there is Milos’ surf center and meeting place for surfers from all nations.
